3 rounds

500 points

This is a non-competitive event designed to get new players some practice with the new rules.  The format will match "experienced" players (players who have played a few games and have at least a basic understanding of the rules) with new players who have never played before.  All prizes will be given away randomly via raffle drawing.

Pairings will be decided randomly, with at least one experienced player per table, and 3 other opponents (for 1000 total points per side).  The side with the experienced player will take the first turn (if both sides have experienced players on them, then roll randomly).  They will walk the other players through the phases of the game, answering questions as they go.

Each of the 3 deployment types will be used, and missions will be taken from the 6th Ed rulebook.

RESTRICTIONS: the Combat Patrol format from Adepticon will be used for this event:
Armies will consist of 500 points or less, and must conform to the following Force Organization restrictions:
⇒ 0-1 HQ
⇒ 1-3 Troops (you MUST bring at least 1 Troop choice)
⇒ 0-1 Elite
⇒ 0-1 Fast Attack
⇒ 0-1 Heavy Support
⇒ 0-1 ‘Swing Slot’ (maybe be used to field one additional Troops, Elite, Fast Attack OR Heavy Support choice)
• Armies are not required to take mandatory unit choices. All other unit restrictions (i.e. 0-1) apply.
• You may spend remaining points on units from anywhere in the Codex.
• No Special/Unique/Named Characters are allowed in the Warhammer 40K Combat Patrol event.
• With the exception of Troops and models with the Swarm Universal Special Rule, No model can have more than 2 Wounds.
• Psykers may only attempt ONE psychic power (or activate a force weapon) per game turn.
• Aside from Troops choices and dedicated Transports, only vehicles with a maximum of 11 in any armor facing may be taken. Dedicated transports and troops may have a
maximum armor facing of 12. Vehicle Squadrons and Artillery units are permitted provided every unit within the unit individually would be permitted. Vehicle upgrades that increase an armor facing may only raise the armor value to a maximum of 12 (this includes Necron Quantum Shielding).
• Forge World/Imperial Armor units are NOT allowed in the Warhammer 40K Combat Patrol event, however players may still use their Forge World models to represent a unit from their codex.
• All games will be played on a 4’ x 4’ surface.
-NO FLIERS WILL BE USED
-NO FORTIFICATIONS WILL BE USED
-NO WARLORD TRAITS WILL BE USED
-NO RANDOM TERRAIN OR OBJECTIVES WILL BE USED
-WHATEVER PSYCHIC POWER COMES WITH YOUR PYSKER WILL BE THE ONE IT USES EACH GAME.  THERE WILL BE NO ROLLS ON THE POWER TABLES.

If in doubt, please remember that this is an event designed to teach the rules to new players, not stomp peoples' faces into the mud.  If you come with this attitude in mind, you should be fine :)

If you have any questions about the event, please feel free to email me at:  indy40k (at) gmail (dot) com

  1. Any armor/invul save restrictions?

  2. I pulled the restrictions straight from the Adepticon website (Adepticon.org, in the 'downloads' section). If it's allowed at the Adepticon, it will be allowed at our event. I don't believe there is any limitation on saves. I'll double-check when I get home, but take a look at the Adepticon site, and build your list from that.

Wait, what? How will this be 6th edition? You've cut out a huge number of the changes vs. 5th (leaving in only random assaults, full strength blasts, Lo,S!, the new targeting/wound allocation rules, and the various subtle USR and FAQ'd changes).

Sorry to flame, but how can this be considered an event focused on learning 6th edition?

This really just seems like "intro to Lo,S! and wound distro nonsense on Nobz and Grey Knights", i.e. 2-wound spam.

To the defensive comment, appealing to Adepticon's authority (at a time when most TOs around the country have gone into full-on head-in-the-sand mode regarding the exciting changes of 6th, e.g. banning 2 FoC, banning some Fortifications, cutting out Warlord rules and Mysterious Objectives) does nothing to convince me this will be fun or balanced, and most of all, it seems anything but a good way to learn 6th.

Unless this format changes, I think I, for one, will pass.

  5. @A: I'm sorry you feel that way. I chose to leave all of these aspects of the new rules primarily because they are easy to add in once you wrap your head around the basics. Most of the people I've spoken to have a harder time learning the new versions of old rules than they do learning completely new concepts. I do plan on using these aspects in our normal events, if that helps to ease your mind.

The event will not be balanced, but hopefully will be a fun way to pick up the basics of the new rules as a collective group.

As far as adopting the Adepticon format for our Combat Patrol events, we have had a lot of complaints about what Restictions were used. There was a group of TOs who were running a similarly-sized event with some success, and we decided to try out their format and see if it works better than ours.

  6. Sounds good to me...personally. I am try to figure out all of the ins and outs that apply to the new IG army I am building and this seems like the perfect chance. There is more than enough time to get in games with allof the new shinies included in 6th for true tourney play.

  7. I haven't played since 3rd or 4th edition, but I got the itch again and bought the 6th edition book. This looks like a good way to get back into it.

  8. what? Rick, when did you decide to start playing 40k again?

  9. About one week after 6th edition came out to be honest. Saw the new hardcover at the comic book store here and on an impulse, bought one. Love the new rules and missed playing with friends. I still have an Eldar army and just bought a 2500 point Deathwing army off eBay. I guess you can say I'm jumping back in with both feet.
